Tips for Planting Trees
The ideal time to plant trees and shrubs is during the dormant season the fall after leaf drop or early spring before bud break. Weather conditions are cool and allow plants to establish roots in the new location before spring rains and summer heat stimulate new top growth. However, trees properly cared for in the nursery or garden center, and given the appropriate care during transport to prevent damage, can be planted throughout the growing season. In tropical and subtropical climates where trees grow year round, any time is a good time to plant a tree, provided that sufficient water is available. In either situation, proper handling during planting is essential to ensure a healthy future for new trees and shrubs. Before you begin planting your tree, be sure you have had all underground utilities located prior to digging.
If the tree you are planting is balled or bare root, it is important to understand that its root system has been reduced by 90 to 95 percent of its original size during transplanting. As a result of the trauma caused by the digging process, trees commonly exhibit what is known as transplant shock. Containerized trees may also experience transplant shock, particularly if they have circling roots that must be cut. Transplant shock is indicated by slow growth and reduced vigor following transplanting. Proper site preparation before and during planting coupled with good follow-up care reduces the amount of time the plant experiences transplant shock and allows the tree to quickly establish in its new location. Carefully follow nine simple steps, and you can significantly reduce the stress placed on the plant at the time of planting.
1. Dig a shallow, broad planting hole.
2. Identify the trunk flare.
3. Remove tree container for containerized trees.
4. Place the tree at the proper height.
5. Straighten the tree in the hole.
6. Fill the hole gently but firmly.
7. Stake the tree, if necessary.
8. Mulch the base of the tree.
9. Provide follow-up care.

Spring Weather Precautions
|
|
|
Rainy Weather Driving Tips: 1. When driving on the freeway, try to drive in center lanes as water tends to pool in the outside lanes 2. Turn your headlights on 3. Increase your following distance 4. SLOW DOWN-it takes longer to stop in wet weather 5. Drive slowly through any puddle of uncertain depth 6. NEVER drive through moving water
Maintenance tips: 1. Replace old or brittle wiper blades 2. Check the tread and inflation of your tires 3. Consider carrying a portable car starter with you
TORNADO Precautions & Preparations: 1. Properly design a "safe room" or in-ground tornado shelter 2. If your house has a basement, find a place where you will be safe from falling debris 3. If no basement, on the first floor find a closet, hallway, or bathroom without windows. Try to put as many walls between you and the outside as possible. Bathrooms often survive tornadoes because the plumbing in the walls provides added structural strength to those walls. If you do use a bathroom, the bathtub is a good option to lay in. Try putting a mattress over you for extra protection 4. If you live in a mobile home, abandon it immediately. Have a proper shelter pre-selected, which needs to be reached in 5 minutes or less 5. Buy a weather radio and use it 6. Stay away from windows and don't open windows to "relieve the air pressure" this has been shown to be a myth 7. If you have helmets of any kind this would be good to put on for protection 8. Have a tornado kit ready at all times near or in your designated tornado shelter, including: first aide kit, special needs for family members, nonperishable food items, battery powered radio, a flashlight, spare shoes, spare clothing, blankets, a whistle or other loud noisemaker, cell phone 9. If you have time turn off all electricity and gas but ONLY if you have time 10. Make sure EVERYONE in the family knows the details of the plan and rehearse going to shelter at least once a year.
