Free Smoke Alarms

The Collinsville Fire Department currently offers free smoke alarms to anyone that needs them and lives within the Collinsville city limits. Smoke alarms are installed in residences free of charge. Stop by Central Fire Station at 1214 West Main or call 918-371-1020 to request a smoke alarm.

Smoke Alarm Importance

Having a smoke alarm is vitally important when it comes to home fire safety; however it is also imperative that you test the alarm twice a year. Never disable a smoke detector simply because it has a low battery. Always replace smoke alarms promptly or call the fire department for assistance.

Installation & Upkeep

Remember to change your detector battery when you change your clock twice a year. A smoke alarm will typically last up to ten years depending on the type and style of smoke detector. Homeowners should install smoke alarms on every level of the home, including the basement, and in every bedroom. The alarm can be placed on the ceiling or high up on the wall. The alarm should be no less than six inches from corners.

Ionization & Photoelectric Smoke Alarms

There are two basic types of smoke alarms for the average home: Ionization and photoelectric. Ionization alarms are much more common. Ionization alarms sound more quickly when flaming, fast moving fire occurs. Photoelectric alarms are quicker at sensing smoldering, smoky fire with no flames.

In general, it is better to have an ionization alarm in your home if you are only going to have one type. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) recommends that both types be installed. Photoelectric may be better in kitchens and other areas of the home where frequent ionization alarm activation is common.
